Established in 1961, the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) unified the efforts of civil rights organizations in Mississippi, including SNCC, CORE, SCLC, the NAACP and other groups. Focused on voter registration and education, COFO organized the 1963 Freedom Vote, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the 1964 Freedom Summer project. Reopened by JSU in 2011, the Center challenges and empowers visitors, cultivates young minds and develops future leaders.
Serving as a temporary home for the Margaret Walker Center as well, COFO regularly host events and public programs.
