Sweet People, Savory Dishes: Sugar’s Place Downtown
n operation since 2008, Sugar’s Place is named after co-owner Glenda Barner’s mother and has become a cherished part of the culinary community in Jackson. Sugar’s Place Downtown is often regarded as one of Downtown Jackson’s best-kept secrets, that is, until it received the prestigious People’s Choice – Restaurant of the Year award from Visit Jackson, MS, earlier this year. For those in the Jackson Foodies Facebook Group, Sugar’s is a familiar favorite. This family-run diner is conveniently located in the Sterling Towers Apartment Complex, right across from the Mississippi College School of Law, making it an easy stop for those working nearby. Although parking is limited to street-side spots and parking meters, the charm of the diner is worth the visit, with breakfast and lunch served Monday through Friday.
As for the food, Sugar’s Place is a top choice for breakfast lovers, but lunch holds its own as well. On a recent visit, the featured special was the Loaded Mama Burger—a mouthwatering, hand-pressed beef burger available for under $10, complete with a side and a refreshing drink of either tea or Sugar’s famous kool-aid. The burger, requested well-done with grilled onions and bacon, showcased more than a quarter-pound of perfectly seasoned, juicy beef. The toasted and buttered bun provided a delightful crunch, while the mix of greens and crisp lettuce added freshness. The grilled onions complemented the crispy bacon, making for a well-balanced, flavorful bite. The Loaded Mama Burger proved to be a standout dish, elevating Sugar’s from just a favorite breakfast spot to a top contender for burgers as well.
